What is maximum safe water velocity?

For continuous service: 3 m/s in steel, 5 m/s in PVC/HDPE. Higher velocities cause erosion and water hammer.

Why limit suction velocity?

Higher suction velocity increases friction losses and reduces available NPSH, risking cavitation in the pump.
